One of my dad's older brothers, Uncle George, ran the Co-op bakery in Tewkesbury, while delivering to the farms he saw a young PoW working in a field. Farmer said he was a decent fellow. Uncle took him home for their Sunday dinner for the rest of the war. About 15 years ago that, now elderly, PoW told the German papers. My two cousins were invited to Germany and celebrated nationally.
Anthropologists know it takes just 12-15% of a population in order to control the rest. My insides are in turmoil. We were as bad as the them but knew to do better.

They were killed, the entire family. How do we recognize all the horrors - and also the humanity, the caring and decency of so many people on all sides.

Many of them were boys 12, 13, 14 - drafted in the last weeks of the war, when Hitler refused to surrender and instead drafted every boy, even though often there were no weapons left. So, many died before they could surrender. The soldiers guarding the concentration camps were near the concentrations camps - Poland, mainly. These soldiers were from the Western front, near the Rhein river -which is where they died en masse. Read Other Losses (1989).
Ghastly war crime! The fire bombing of Dresden, another terrible war crime as was the fire bombing of Tokyo and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The even bigger point in the article is that at least the million young German POWs deliberately killed was done for the INTENT of destroying German self-love, turning it into self-loathing - and it worked - and there have been many cookie cutter operations, instilling self-loathing in whites, men, Anglos, etc
This is the first time to encounter this story with a researched eye witness. I have heard of anecdotes stories, but with little evidence and I never thought it was on this scale of destruction. One thing we must always remember, that many evil things happen in a war, and sometimes too gruesome to report at the time, that the memory is simply left to die with the destruction caused (the Balkans - Serb, Kosovo wars reveal this dilemma). This reminds of the Wikileaks and the Assange saga, of bringing "dead memories" back to public consciousness.
