It could be a poem, a song, a bit of a story, an image you love. It could be something of yours, or from someone else. It could be recent or from ages and ages ago. It could be from someone famous, or someone unknown.

It could also be: what has your journey been like, about creativity?

It could also be that you’d just like to listen.

THOUGHTS OF WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING ABOUT CREATIVITY

There was a time when “everybody” - meaning everybody I knew - was going to movies, buying records, readings novels, going to plays. There was a guitar in just about every home. When I went into someone’s home, there would be a bookcase, and I would recognize a lot of the books. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest comes to mind. But there were also so many others. Slaughterhouse 5 just came to mind. People talked about the books and movies, including comedies.

And now? When will the world crash? So many further disaster stories come to mind.

As for creativity …. I started putting it more to the side about 2012, and even my creative pieces became “political” - meaning related to social issues. That’s nothing new, actually. I think of Uncle Tom’s Cabin - for years the second most widely sold book worldwide, second only to the Bible. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s powerful anti-slavery novel. I remember being swept away by it when I came upon it, on my parents’ bookshelf, when I was about 13.

Still, in so many lives, creativity has taken a back seat. There’s always yet another video to watch on the latest variant, the latest political outrage.

Now …. PAUSE.

I will read a couple of poems from long ago - but it feel like just yesterday.

WHO WILL HELP ME WITH MY SPARK?

Then it’s time for you. It could be something you’ve written, or a poem or song or even A picture you love.

There’ll also be time for: what has your journey been like, about creativity?

So many children love creative things, like drawing. “Refrigerator art” - so names for all the drawings that end up on refrigerators, conveniently pinned there with little magnets. And there’s imaginative play. Dance. Music lessons.

And then … ?

I’m remembering being in the home of country people, farmers, as a child - way out in the Quebec countryside. I’m sure they didn’t have much education or much money. But they had music. The grandfather had a violin. There was singing and dancing on Sunday afternoon.

I’m also remembering a tiny community, maybe 20 houses, then farms around. The older people were talking. Before TV came along, they put on plays at the little community center. That ended with TV.

How much space does creativity have in your life?
