I think you were on the minds of the people that you invited who were there. And it may be something (giving the party) that you thought you wanted to do but you remained conflicted for the reason why you gave the party.
"Nobody was asking anything of me at that party where I wasn’t having a good time." With all you give in your life.... no one was wanting to talk? was Reiner in jail then? Maybe they were afraid they didn't follow your news enough. Shakespeare doesn't know everything ~ it certainly wasn't your fault, you were the giver!
I can definitely relate. Always preferred small groups for the same reasons stated in your post.
