NEW INTERVIEW. Dr Rik Celie. His passion from childhood: to help the poorest of the poor. Doctors on Mission.
When he was 11 or 12, Rik heard of Dr Schweitzer and Dr Livingstone. He immediately knew: that's what he wanted to do with his life - to become a doctor so he could help the poorest of the poor.
And that's what he has done - now for 33 years with his mission in Bolivia.
He also went to Haiti after the huge earthquake, going further inland where no other doctor went. He was also in Pakistan, very dangerous, where a medical colleague was murdered by the Taliban.
What is his approach to medicine? Do whatever works. Sometimes it is Western medicine. Sometimes it is local herbs. Keep being open to learning. Save as many lives as you can.
Still every day worldwide 30,000 children under 5 die from just 5 very preventable diseases.
Rik’s hope is to be able to continue with his mission until he's 100, and for Doctors on Mission to continue long after. Now there are some local doctors in the Andes and the Amazon in Bolivia, and some small local clinics.
What Rik Celie and his team need most to be able to continue their work: donations, funds, money - for medical supplies, for repairs to their 35-year-old vehicle, and for living expenses. If you can, please help.

What an amazing story! Dedication, Love, Caring, Selflessness and Persistence. And a good reminder to all of us what is really important! Thinking of a new year's resolution? Think of what you can give to make a real difference. And this is a good place to start!
